Vol 920 scores big in Italy

Italian adaptation of compelling format draws large audiences

MONTRÉAL, June 13, 2016Flight 616, the Italian adaptation of the Québec television series Vol 920, a Productions J format, has become a prime-time hit for the Italia Uno channel.

The Italian version produced by Magnolia consists of six 90-minute-plus episodes. Sixteen contestants on a quest for true love – 8 men and 8 women – compete in a variety of challenges in 6 spectacular foreign locations. The winning couple gets a round-the-world dream vacation. Actress and television personality Paola Barale has won acclaim as the host of the show.

Flight 616 has proven particularly popular with the young adult audience, which has been growing steadily week after week. In the 25-34 age group, the show is drawing 30% more viewers than the average for Italia Uno’s line-up.

The ratings are not the only metric by which Flight 616 has performed well. The social media buzz around the show developed by Jean-Martin Bisson indicates strong interest among Italian television viewers: during its time slot, Flight 616 is the No. 1 trending subject in Italy on Twitter. The interest in the show is also evident on Facebook, Instagram and the website of Italia Uno’s parent company Mediaset.

The success of Flight 616 has made people sit up and take notice beyond Italy’s borders. Two other Magnolia-affiliated production companies recently optioned the format for France and Spain. Magnolia is a subsidiary of Banijay/Zodiac, the world’s third-largest production group.

"We are gratified by the strong performance of Magnolia’s deft adaptation of Flight 616," said France Lauzière, Senior Vice-President, Quebecor Content, and Vice-President, Programming, TVA Group. "It is proof positive that Québec ideas and formats can travel successfully around the world. Quebecor Content is reaping the fruits of its efforts, spurring us to pursue export markets even more aggressively."

"We are very proud to see the superb numbers for Flight 616 in Italy," said Jean-Martin Bisson, who developed Vol 920. "We worked closely with the Magnolia team on every phase of the production to help make the best possible adaptation for Italian audiences. We have high hopes for the format in other international markets."
